Introduction to Drugs Update

Pharmacokinetics - Part 1

Pharmacokinetics - Part 2
The nurses’ role in knowing the half life and steady states of drugs they administer; the affect of smoking, reduced nutrition and dehydration on pharmacokinetics

- Objective: The participant will understand how drug distribution, metabolism and elimination is altered in the elderly; factors impacting on these activities and how to apply knowledge and identify adverse drug reactions related to these changes.
Pharmacodynamics and what nurses need to know
What the drug does to the body, the agonists, the antagonists, receptor sensitivity; the desired effects and the adverse effects, including falls

- Objective: The participant will understand the alterations of pharmacodynamics in the elderly; how changes in homeostatic mechanisms impact therapeutic outcomes; how to apply knowledge and identify adverse drug reactions common in the elderly.
Adverse Drug Reactions
How to identify adverse drug reactions and the role of nurses in avoiding them

- Objective: The participant will understand the impact of adverse drug interactions in the elderly; the different types of adverse drug interactions; the significance of pharmacogenetics in drug selection; how to identify and reduce common adverse drug reactions.
